What should you do when your dog is afraid of thunder?
When thunder becomes terrifying for dogs... It's perfectly natural for dogs to be afraid of thunder. Their hearing is 4-5 times more sensitive than humans! What we consider loud, to a dog, can sound like an explosion right next to their ear. For those with dogs who are afraid of thunder, we have some tips to help them feel better, even when alone on a noisy rainy day.
Create a comforting retreat . Prepare a room or corner of your home as a resting place where you feel as secure as if someone is always there with you.
Use music or shelter to create a sense of calm. We might turn on music or the TV to help reduce the intensity of the thunder.
Be close to your sibling and comfort them. Sit nearby, speak softly, but don't coddle them too much. Just let them know you're there and that it's okay.
Play with your sibling to distract them. Find activities or play with your sibling to divert their attention and make them feel that the sound of thunder isn't as scary as they think.
Wrap your baby in a blanket to make them feel like they're being hugged constantly. Have some accessories or things to help them feel secure, like they're being hugged all the time.
Don't do these things to your dog
❌ Don't scold them when they bark, run away, or tremble — this will only make them more afraid.
❌ Don't leave them alone in an open area.
❌ Don't pick them up tightly or force them to go outside to watch the thunder.
